At the end of July, we reported on rumours that Disney was close to signing Chicago and Memoirs Of A Geisha director Rob Marshall to helm the new Pirates Of The Carribbean movie, On Stranger Tides. However since then, there’s been no official news on whether Rob definitely got the gig or not.
However it seems Marshall himself has now confirmed it, with AICN reporting that at a Q&A after the screening of his latest movie, Nine, Rob was asked about his next film. He said, “Y’know, it’s something that I was offered and never in the world thought I would do but then I was like ‘why not?’… I’m doing ‘Pirates of the Caribbean…” He also said that he’d already met with Johnny Depp and that they’re both excited to work together.
Although it’s only confirmation of something that looked likely to happen anyway, it’s nice to know that someone has definitely been signed up for On Stranger Tides. It’s also good to hear that he’s talking about Johnny Depp’s involvement, as the return of Jack Sparrow had seemed shaky slightly following the departure of Dick Cook from Disney and also the recent news that Depp was in talks to star in The Tourist, which is due to start filming just before Pirates 4 goes into production next May. However it seems that as things stand, Depp will be donning the pirate gear once more.
