I can’t imagine there have been many people who have been praying for the last 17 years that they’d make a sequel to Pure Country, however while the movie, which starred country singer George Strait, wasn’t a box office smash, it’s continued to do well on DVD and video, and was also responsible for selling six million soundtrack albums (in fact the soundtrack made more money than the movie did at the cinema).
As a result, THR confirms that a follow-up is indeed in the works, with George Strait once more starring as country superstar Dusty Chandler, and the original’s helmer, Christopher Cain, directing. The film, called A Pure Country Gift, will be about a girl given a beautiful singing voice by three angels, with Cain saying, “In her climb to fame and fortune, she breaks some of the angels’ rules, so they take away her big voice. Life has rules; if you follow them, life works. That’s the moral of the story.”
Sounds great, because everyone loves movies about conformism.
While the main role sounds like it’s going to try and play on the popularity of Miley Cyrus, the part has actually gone to singer Katrina Elam, who will make her acting debut in the film.
Director Christopher Cain, who’s best knowing for his work on Young Guns, is also the father of Lois & Clark actor Dean Cain, and rather suprisingly, the two of the wrote the screenplay for A Pure Country Gift together. But then, it’s not like Dean Cain is doing much else these days.
