Ever since Moon hit cinemas, there’s been a lot of interest in what Duncan Jones would direct next. It intially appeared his next movie would be Mute, about a woman whose disappearance causes a mystery for her partner, a mute bartender, but it appears this has been put to one side (for the time being at least – he’s still working on it) so he can make Source Code, with Jake Gyllenhaal starring.
Variety reports that filming on the movie is due to start early next year, following a couple of years where the script has floated around Hollywood, with Topher Grace attached to star at one point and Shane Abbess directing. The film itself is a sort of Quantum Leap meets Groundhog Day thriller, about a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and must them keep reliving a terrible train bombing until he can work out who did it. Although it’s apparently a simuation of the real event, over time the soldier begins to realise that maybe he can just the past.
It’s quite a cool set-up, and those familiar with Ben Ripley’s original screenplay (which has since been revised by Billy Ray), saying it’s a very original thriller that should certainly be worth a look. If it’s half as good as Moon, it’s definitely worth lining up for.
