For some reason I’d just always assumed Anthony Hopkins would be playing Odin in Thor. It’s a role he seems born for, and while he does seem to be phoning in his performances a little these days, there’s still nobody else I can imagine in the role.
Variety has confirmed Hopkins is in negotiations for the role of the chief god and ruler of Asgard, who’s also the father of the film’s superhero good guy, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the villain, Loki (Tom Hiddleston).
However from what we’ve heard about the film so far, Hopkins may not have too much to do, as much of the Marvel movie will be set on Earth rather than in Asgard, with Thor and his human alter-ego, Dr. Donald Blake, having to stave off Loki’s attempt to take over the world. Ol’ Thor will also have a love interest in the form of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.
We’ll next see Hopkins opposite Benicio Del Toro in The Wolfman and he’s also completed filmin on his first Woody Allen movie, You Will Me A Tall Dark Stranger. It seems the 71-year-old has no plans to slow down anytime soon.
The Kenneth Branagh directed Thor is set for release on May 20th, 2011.
