Although there’s no official word on what the movie will be, Variety reports that breakout District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s next movie has the greenlight, with the South African helmer getting Media Rights Captial to commit to funding his next movie based on his pitch.
All we officially now is that it will be another sci-fi film, and while it’ll cost a bit more than the $30 million he had for District 9, it will still be significantly cheaper than most effects filled movie. Apparently retaining creative control was more important to Blomkamp that having endless amount of cash. “MRC is letting me make the film I want to make, and that is by far the most important thing here,” Blomkamp says, “The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, (one) that comes directly from me.”
While Blomkamp has previously talked about making a sequel to the immensely successful District 9, it doesn’t sound like this will be it, although that doesn’t mean he won’t revisit the ‘prawns’ at a later date. At the moment he’s set to immediately start writing and preparing the visual effects for his second film as director (he’s an ex-CGI man himself, so is heavily involved in the special effects for his films), with filming due sometime next year. Whatever he comes up with, let’s hope it’s as cool as District 9.
