Only last week it was announced that Saw producers, Twisted Pictures, had snatched the right to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre away from Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. Now comes the first news on what the new company plans to do with the franchise, and although things are still at an incredibly early stage, we’re sure it’s going to get many fans up in arms.
Shock Til You Drop has been talking to producer Peter Berg, and he’s let slip that rather than a straight-up sequel to the hit 2003 remake and its rather less successful 2006 prequel, they’re thinking of going slight sequel and slightly reboot with their new movie. Berg says, “We’re coming up with the idea. It’s a ‘what if?’ It’s 35 years later, there’s a relative going back. Why is he going back? I don’t want to set it in a dusty town. How do we make it more urban but keep that feel. There will be some relatives, some new people. There’s still the subtext of ‘are they eating these people?’ The whole idea of cannibalism, we’re bringing it back.”
Screenwrite Stephen Susco (The Grudge) is currently working on the script, although we’ll have to wait an see whether a 35-years-later, urban Leatherface is actually a good idea. Whatever they do with it, it’s going to be in 3D, as it seems all horror movies have to be nowadays.
