At this rate, Chris Pine is going to be starring in every movie Hollywood produces. Only yesterday came the news that he’ll start shooting The Art Of Making Money in the spring, and he’s only just started filming Tony Scott’s Unstoppable. He’s also got a Star trek follow-up in the works, and a couple of other roles in various stages of post-production.
Now Variety reports that he’s in talks to be the new Jack Ryan. A few months ago Geroge Clooney was attached to the role, but even he seemed to realise he was too old to take over the part that’s previously been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. Now Paramount (which is also behind both Star Trek and The Art Of Making Money) is talking to Pine about giving Tom Clancy’s CIA analyst a new life on the big screen.
Although negotations have only just begun, Variety says that Pine is expected to come onboard, which would give the young star, who was firmly on the c-list until he landed Star Trek, his second major blockbuster franchise.
Even if he does sign up, it’s uncertain when filming would commence on the new Jack Ryan movie, as the project is still taking shape (it will be an original story, rather than based on one of Clancy’s novels), with Hossein Amini currently working on the first draft of the script. At the moment then, it’s a race between whether it’s Jack Ryan or a Captain Kirk sequel that gets into cinemas first.
