It’s been 12 years since the Griswolds last went on Vacation, which saw Chevy Chase’s character heading to Vegas. That followed three earlier instalments, the first two of which, National Lampoon’s Vacation and European Vacation, are comedy classics. Now New Line is now planning on bringing the series back, although this time it’ll be Vacation: The Next Generation.
The new film will see the torch passed from Clark Griswold to his son Rusty, who is now a father himself and takes his family on a road trip. We’re assuming hilarity ensues – or not, if it’s like the last couple of Vacation movies.
While there’s no deal in place yet for original stars Chevy Chase of Beverly D’Angelo to appear in this follow-up, New Line is apparently ensuring there’s room for them to show as the Griswold grandparents if they want to.
Plans for the movie are at a fairly early stage, as the studio hasn’t even found writers for the film yet. However we can expect things to move pretty fast, as THR says this is a labour of love for New Line executive Sam Brown, who was sifting through the titles that parent company Warner owned the rights to and came across Vacation, a movie he’s apparently seen more times than any other. He’s now keen to revitalise the franchise with this new generation movie.
David Dobkins (Wedding Crashers) is attached to produce and possibly direct, although there’s no news on when the studio is hoping to get this new vacation into cinemas.
