With quite a few new movies hitting US multiplexes this weekend, it’s the Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg undead comedy Zombieland that’s come out on top, taking $25 million in its first three days. The film benefitted from some good reviews and great buzz to ensure a pretty good start at the box office.
The other new films didn’t have so much to boast about, because they all came in lower on the list than the reissue of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D. In the US the Pixar movies were released as a double feature, which limited the number of showing cinemas could have in a day, and yet the films still took on $12.5 million in their first three days for a third place finish on the chart. However as the films are only being released for two weeks, it may be that audiences knew they had to get to cinemas quickly to see whether the 3D magic works.
At number four was another new entry, Ricky Gervais’ The Invention Of Lying, which got off to a not particularly auspicious start with $7.35 million.
Although Michael Moore’s new documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story opened in a couple of cinemas last week, it expanded to just under a thousand screens this week, allowing it to enter the top 10 for the first time at number seven, with $4.85 million. It took exactly the same amount as the final new entry on the chart, Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It!. While the movie didn’t cost much to make, the Ellen Page starring female roller derby flick must have hoped for a slight larger debut than it got.
