Hollywood’s combined effort to turn Sam Worthington into a major movie star continues apace with the announcement that he’s signed up for The Candidate, a remake of Kasper Barfoed’s Danish film of the same name. The film centers on a defense attorney who is trying to track down a group of blackmailers when he ends up being wanted for a murder. The mystery also ties in to the death of the lawyer’s father.
It’s slightly unusual in that remakes are normally planned of foreign films that have had some success in the US, but Barfoed’s film has yet to find an American distributor. Even so Summit Entertainment obviously still sees enough promise in the film to plan an English language version.
It’s fascinating with Worthington how he’s come out of nowhere to nab so many coveted movie roles (although admittedly The Candidate isn’t particularly amongst those), having already appeared as Marcus Wright in Terminator: Salvation, as well as nabbing the lead roles in the upcoming Avatar and Clash Of The Titans. It’s a remarkable amount of trust that filmmakers are showing in an actor with little track record, although it is undoubtedly true Hollywood could do with a few more young action stars.
