The Hollywood Reporter has been busy getting updates on all sorts of DC Comics adaptations. In fact it’s quite impressive what’s still in the works, as while Marvel has been turning everything in their library into a movie, DC seems to have had difficulty actually getting anything onto the silver screen. However that hasn’t stopped them trying, with The Losers starting principal photography this week, Red being worked on by Summit (and as we reported this morning, Morgan Freeman’s in talks for a role), Ryan Reynolds getting cast as The Green Lantern, the Josh Brolin starring Jonah Hex haven’t recently finished filming in Louisiana, while Human Target is being developed as a TV series.
In order to try and get more of sister company DC’s properties onto the big screen, Warner Bros. has hired three of the comic company’s top writers to act as consultants, which has led to a new treatment for The Flash, which is currently being turned into a screenplay by Dan Mazeau. The consultants are also working on the likes of Teen Titans, which was previously being handled by top screenwriter Akiva Goldsman.
However probaly the most interesting news is that Warner Bros. is asking for ptiches from writers for possible Adam Strange and Aquaman movies, both of which would be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company. However, we’d be lucky to get an Aquaman movie that really was directed by James Cameron, as it was in the TV series Entoruage.
Other projects that are in development include Bizarro Superman (who’s an imperfect clone of Superman), which is currently at the screenplay stage, a sequel to Constantine, two Green Arrow movies (one of which is an origin story, and the other titled Super Max, which would be set in prison), as well as Shazam, which Peter Berg (Hancock) is in talks to direct.
However their three biggest titles are still in limbo, with plans for Wonder Woman having stalled, Batman almost certainly getting another outing but no one knows when, and a Superman sequel still in the planning stages.
However it certainly appears that both Warner and DC are being far more proactive in how they go about bringing the comic characters to the big screen, so we should see a lot more movies soon.
