There are rumours abounding that The Wrestler director, Darren Aronofsky, may have to leave the proposed remake of Robocop due to the fact that it looks like he’s going full steam ahead on Black Swan and wouldn’t therefore have time to make the half-man-half-machine movie if MGM still wants to get it into theatres for 2011.
Well, technically that’s not true. If he was a normal director he could do it, but this is a man who likes to spend years getting everything in place before the cameras roll, which means he’s only managed four movies in the past 11 years. So at the pace he works, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to do both.
Apparently MGM has already started putting its feelers out for a new director in case it can’t work out the scheduling with Aronofsky. The main hope that he will be behind the camera for Robocop is that the budget isn’t yet in place for Black Swan and the film can’t go forward until it is.
However while he’d be an interesting choice for Robocop, Black Swan seems a better fit with Aronofsky’s previous movies. It’s due to star Natalie Portman as a ballet dancer who gets into a bitter rivlary with another dancer in the run up to an important performances, although she doesn’t know if her rival is a supernatural apparition or a delusion.
