Disney has been talking about making a new take on Jules Verne’s classic 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea for a while, but it now appears things are diving forwards with the announcement that Braveheart and Pearl Harbor scribe Randall Wallace has been brought in to rewrite the screenplay. Technically it’s not an adaptation of the book as Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea plans to tell the story of Nemo’s early years and how he came to captain the mighty submarine, Nautilus.
The movie is due to be directed by McG, and is Disney’s latest attempt to turn one of their theme park rides into a movie. The 20,000 Leagues Disneyland attraction was based on the 1954 movie starring Kirk Douglas, however in keeping with The Haunted Mansion and Pirates Of The Carribbean, a film isn’t just an opportunity to make money at the box office, but also brings new life to the theme park ride, which the company can then hopefully get another 50 years out of.
