After the massive critical success of Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, he’s going in a slightly different direction with his next film and he’s got Natalie Portman to sign on to help him do it. She’s agreed to appear in Black Swan, as a veteran ballet dancer who is locked in a competitive battle with an otherworldly rival dancer, but it isn’t apparent whether the rival is actually something supernatural or if she’s a delusion Portman’s character is having.
The film is described as as a spine-tingler in the vein of The Others, which should be quite a good fit for Aronofsky, who’s shown he’s very good at making audiences feel ill at ease.
There is one slight problem though. Whilst the film was originally going to be financed by Universal, they’ve pulled out, so the makers are going to have to find somebody else to bankroll it. However with names like Aronofsky and Portman attached, it’s said quite a few studios and specialty divisions are interested in the movie, and as long as the money comes through, Aronofsky hopes to start filming this year.
