I’m sure you’re just like us. You just can’t get enough dimensions. Well a British Company has come to the rescue of those of us fed up with just three of the bloody things (well, technically four if you include time), although in an oddly unpatriotic move, they’ve done it in Romania. Light Cinemas has opened what’s described as the world’s first 6D cinema in Bucharest, as part of their all-digital multiplex in the city.
Unfortunately they don’t get the extra dimensions by doing anything clever involving string theory and theoretical physics, it’s to do with adding to the cinematic experience with wind, odors, rain and chairs that move in sync with what’s happening on screen. The 40 seat cinema is said to have cost around 600,000 Euros ($525,000) to install, and the owners are hoping to make their money back in 2-4 years. And they should be able to get a lot of people in and out each day, because so far there are only four 6D films, which range between four and 13 minutes in length, with tickets costing between two and four Euros each.
There’s no news on whether Light Cinemas are planning to bring this innovation to the UK, but the two men behind the company, John Sullivan and Kevin Pullinger, were reported earlier this week as thinking about putting in a bid for the Showcase chain of cinemas, which is currently up for sale.
